Moldovan Prime Minister Vasile Tofan arrived in Kyiv on Monday to address urgent questions of regional security and energy dependency. He is accompanied by three cabinet members, including the ministers of defence, energy, and infrastructure, signaling a focus on practical cooperation rather than symbolic diplomacy.
The Moldovan government stated that Tofan and Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi will examine bilateral trade, regional defense, and the two nations' trajectories toward European Union membership. Tofan is scheduled to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Ukrainian parliamentary leader Ruslan Stefanchuk during the visit.
Energy supplies are a central theme of the trip. Tofan indicated on 12 October that Moldova is considering buying natural gas from Ukraine to meet domestic needs. This plan follows a meeting on 14 October between Tofan and Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal, who discussed winter preparations and shared sector challenges.
Moldova's President Maia Sandu recently stated that her country is prepared to accept a new wave of refugees from Ukraine if the humanitarian situation worsens. This potential influx adds demographic pressure to the economic discussions taking place in Kyiv.
The two prime ministers will also attend the Kyiv International Economic Forum together. The event focuses on investment opportunities and expanding economic cooperation between the two states.
Tofan's visit occurs as both countries seek to solidify their strategic alignment. The presence of the defence minister alongside economic counterparts suggests that Kyiv and Chisinau are linking military readiness with long-term economic stability.
