Netflix has secured an exclusive overall deal with Joseph Kay, the creator and showrunner of the medical drama Transplant. The agreement allows Kay to develop and write new television series specifically for Netflix Canada. His initial project under this contract is an untitled family drama.

The move deepens a working relationship that has existed for several years. Kay recently served as a consulting producer on the second season of North of North, an Arctic-set comedy that airs on the CBC. That series is scheduled to return on Nov. 5. He also co-executive produced the upcoming adaptation of Carley Fortune's novel This Summer Will Be Different for Netflix.

Transplant aired on NBC in the United States and ran for four seasons. The series centered on Dr. Bashir "Bash" Hamed, a Syrian refugee and emergency medicine physician played by Hamza Haq. The plot followed Hamed and his younger sister, Amira, played by Sirena Gulamgaus, as they rebuilt their lives and medical careers in Toronto. Sphère Média Plus produced the show in association with CTV and NBCUniversal International Studios.

Kay brings a varied background in television writing to the new partnership. His previous credits include Ransom, This Life, and Republic of Doyle. In a statement released Wednesday, he described himself as "beyond grateful and thrilled" to join the platform. He cited his "huge admiration for Netflix's entire team" and their drive to tell stories that connect with global audiences.

Executives at Netflix Canada endorsed the hiring. Danielle Woodrow and Tara Woodbury, directors of content, characterized Kay as a "seasoned and gifted creator and showrunner." They noted his ability to support other writers and expressed satisfaction with their prior collaborations. The company stated it is pleased to expand its professional relationship with him.

The deal was negotiated by Casey Chisick of Cassels Brock & Blackwell LLP. Kay is currently represented by Dustin Alpern and Conrad Sun at Sundust Management. The exclusive nature of the agreement means Kay will develop new scripted content for Netflix rather than other streaming services or broadcasters.

This signing adds to the roster of Canadian talent working within the Netflix ecosystem. It follows a period of increased investment in local productions that air domestically and internationally. The new family drama marks the first original series Kay will create under this specific exclusive arrangement.
