Iara Dossantos Bomfim, 29, has been charged with 10 felony counts of child abuse in Orange County, California, following a review of nanny cam footage by the District Attorney's Office.
Prosecutors state the alleged abuse began on June 17, when the infant was two months and 10 days old, and continued until he was just over three months old. Video evidence captured Bomfim punching, hitting, and violently shaking the baby during this period.
The family discovered the incidents on July 11 after the mother heard the infant scream and checked the monitoring system. The D.A.'s office described a scene where Bomfim sat on a yoga ball, bouncing the baby so his head and neck moved back and forth and side to side. Footage also shows her striking the child in the back of the head with a closed fist. Bomfim told the mother that everything was fine before the review.
Bomfim fled to Brazil in July after the discovery. She returned to the United States and was arrested on Friday while attempting to create a new profile on the childcare platform Care.com to advertise her services.
She has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is currently being held on $500,000 bail. If convicted on all 10 counts, the maximum sentence is 18 years in state prison.
