For the families of Khloe Ishway and Claudia, the long wait for legal accountability ended on Thursday. The Baltimore City State's Attorney's office announced indictments against two men accused of killing a 12-year-old girl and a 76-year-old woman in separate incidents last month. The charges mark the first formal step toward trial in both high-profile cases.

The indictments name Tyree Reynolds and Montray McCray. Reynolds faces 29 counts connected to the shooting of Ishway. The girl was killed on Oct. 3 at Leon Day park while attending a youth football game. McCray faces charges related to the death of the 76-year-old woman, who was shot on Sept. 29 while walking with her husband in the Fells Point neighborhood. The husband survived the attack and his injuries.

State's Attorney Ivan Bates held a news conference to detail the charges. He stated that his office will pursue sentences of life without the possibility of parole in both matters. Bates cited the callous nature of the crimes and the defendants' lengthy criminal histories as reasons for seeking the maximum penalty. He described the victims as the most vulnerable members of the community.

"My office will be pursuing sentences of life, without the possibility of parole, in both of these matters," Bates said. He added that the defendants demonstrated a profound disregard for human life. Bates emphasized that the victims were taken by repeat offenders who showed a blatant disregard for the lives of those around them.

Bates said the state wants to send a clear message to potential future offenders. "We will not negotiate.. we will only give these four letters: L-I-F-E. We will give life," he said. The prosecutor noted that the office owes it to the victims, their families, and the people of Baltimore to pursue justice with determination.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott joined Bates at the news conference. Scott expressed his agreement with the state's attorney's approach. "Both of these cases are horrific, and our hearts remain with the families and loved ones of Khloe and Claudia," Scott said. He noted that the city has some of the best detectives and prosecutors in the world.

Scott told the crowd that anyone who commits reckless violence should be held accountable by spending the rest of their lives in prison. "We will find you, we will find you accountable," he said. The indictments now move both cases from the investigative phase to the pre-trial stage in the Baltimore City Circuit Court.
