Anthropic Backers Face Massive Windfall Before Public Listing
Early investors and late stage funds stand to gain billions as the AI company prepares for a potential two trillion dollar valuation.

The tension surrounding Anthropic's impending public listing lies in the sheer scale of the wealth transfer it promises to its investors. While the market is bracing for a debut at a valuation of up to two trillion dollars, the financial stakes are already enormous even before the stock exchange rings its opening bell. At the company's most recent private market valuation of 965 billion dollars, the holdings of various venture capital firms and early backers already total billions. This scenario creates a unique dynamic where early risks have already yielded massive returns, while later stage giants are positioned to see their investments double or more.
The path to this moment has been marked by rapid valuation increases over the last few years. In 2021, the company was valued at 461 million dollars during its Series A round. By 2023, that figure had surged to 5 billion dollars during the Series C. The trajectory continued steeply upward, reaching 183 billion dollars last year before climbing to 380 billion dollars earlier this year. This consistent growth has transformed modest early checks into substantial portfolios for those who entered at the right time.
Eric Schmidt exemplifies the return on early conviction. The former Google CEO invested in the 2021 Series A when the startup was valued at 461 million dollars. Today, his ownership stands at approximately one percent of the company. Even at the current private valuation, his stake is worth nearly 10 billion dollars. This position highlights how early entry can define long term financial outcomes in the AI sector.
Later stage investors have also captured significant value, though their entry points were much higher. Iconiq wrote a 6 billion dollar check to Anthropic last year when the company was already valued at 183 billion dollars. That massive bet is now worth 17 billion dollars. If the IPO proceeds as expected, this position has the potential to double, reflecting the high leverage of late stage capital in a high growth environment.
Menlo Ventures played a pivotal role in the company's expansion by leading the Series D round. The firm has invested more than 1 billion dollars in Anthropic over time. That cumulative investment now represents a stake worth 14 billion dollars. This demonstrates the sustained commitment of major venture firms to the AI lab and the corresponding appreciation of their holdings.
Sequoia entered the picture much later this year, backing the lab when it was already valued at 380 billion dollars. The firm invested 3 billion dollars, which secured about one percent ownership. Despite the high entry price, Sequoia has already more than doubled its initial investment. This rapid appreciation underscores the intense demand for equity in leading AI companies, even at premium valuations.
Sound Ventures, launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, has also seen significant gains. The firm invested 35 million dollars in the 2023 Series C round. It subsequently funneled an additional 400 million dollars into the company. This combined investment has resulted in a stake worth billions. Notably, Kutcher left Sound Ventures this year to launch a new venture capital firm, a move that adds another layer to the evolving landscape of AI investment.
Spark Capital holds a unique position as the only venture firm known to have a board seat at Anthropic. The firm invested 75 million dollars in the 2023 Series C round when the valuation was 5 billion dollars. That position has ballooned more than ninetyfold to reach 7 billion dollars. This extraordinary multiple illustrates the transformative power of early involvement in a company that has become a central figure in the artificial intelligence industry.
As the IPO approaches, the focus will shift from private valuations to public market performance. The expected listing this year at a valuation of up to 2 trillion dollars signals that the market anticipates continued growth. For investors like Schmidt, Iconiq, Menlo, Sequoia, Sound Ventures, and Spark Capital, the next few months will determine whether their current paper wealth translates into liquid gains. The outcome will serve as a benchmark for the entire AI sector, indicating how investors value leadership in this rapidly evolving field.
