Lauryn Abt is preparing to expand her Clear Lake Shores boutique, a move designed to manage inventory and support a growing customer base that travels from outside the area to shop. The owner of The Junkyard Pearl said she intends to open a second location and construct a warehouse in the near future. This infrastructure change will allow her to clean and stage the existing space more effectively. Currently, the shop occupies a single location where Abt curates a specific style of merchandise.
The business sells colorful jewelry, clothing, fashion accessories, home decor, and vintage items. Abt sources products that are handmade, distinctive, and well-made. She stated that she looks for items that generate compliments and conversation. "I’m always looking for color, quality and weird and fun things that stop people and get compliments," Abt said. "And that kind of makes you feel confident with what you’re wearing too."
Abt’s background in the industry stems from her family history. Her mother operated boutiques, and her grandfather sold antiques. Before establishing The Junkyard Pearl, Abt sold goods at traveling shows in Round Top. She identified an opportunity to integrate a retail space with the restaurants and bars that already attract visitors to Clear Lake Shores. She described the shop as a place for mothers and daughters to spend time together. "The one time we get along is when we go out to lunch and go shopping together," Abt said.
The expansion plan includes hiring a larger team. Abt said the additional staff will allow her to focus more on creative aspects of the business. She noted that the current single location serves as a destination where people travel specifically to visit. "We’ve turned this into a destination store where people travel to come and see us," Abt said. "My biggest accomplishment is creating something people want to take a detour to."
Customers describe the atmosphere as colorful and eclectic. Abt acknowledged the wide variety of products in the store. "We're so eclectic," Abt said. "We have just such a wide variety of products … It's just a colorful atmosphere when people come in and they're like, ‘I love it here. This is my happy place.’" The shop currently operates without the planned second location or dedicated warehouse space.
