Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, the Danish actor best known for portraying Jaime Lannister in the HBO series Game of Thrones, arrived in Kyiv for a visit that included a stay in a metro tunnel during a Russian air raid. The actor is currently serving as a UN Goodwill Ambassador, a role he has held since 2016.
On October 28, Coster-Waldau rode the Kyiv subway with local residents. When sirens sounded, he joined them in taking shelter from the attacks. Reuters photographs, cited by the Spanish newspaper El País, show the actor resting on a fold-out bed while waiting for the all-clear. He also took selfies with Ukrainians inside the station.
Coster-Waldau’s itinerary included a stop at a bar in the Podilskyi district. Veta Zadorozhnaya, a Threads user, shared a photo of herself with the actor and described him as an incredibly pleasant and handsome man. She noted that they did not have time to chat because he was in a hurry.
The specific purpose of the Danish actor’s trip to Kyiv has not been publicly stated. His previous engagement with Ukraine includes a February 2026 event organized by the Danish Cultural Institute, where he read works by Ukrainian authors alongside other participants.
His visit follows a pattern of high-profile Western celebrities traveling to the country during the war. In August, actress and director Angelina Jolie returned to Ukraine to meet with children and families of soldiers returned from captivity. Jolie also paid tribute to the memory of Oleksii Yukov during that trip.
