520 million units sold across platforms by 2022 make Tetris the best-selling video game of all time, a statistic that underscores the enduring appeal of the 42-year-old puzzle title. In Denver, that global legacy has found a local foothold in a monthly tournament that has outlasted two brewery locations and a pandemic.

The group, known as The Tetris League, traces its origins to 2009, when a member named Jesse began organizing informal matches at Forest Room Five. By 2012, the group relocated to Grandma’s House Brewery on South Broadway. Jesse stepped back in 2016 to raise a family, passing the organizing duties to Hiram Yates, who had discovered the group after attending the Tetris World Championship that year. Following the closure of Grandma’s House, the league moved to its current venue, Someplace Else Brewery in Arvada.

Yates has hosted the event for over a decade, citing the provision of a communal space as his primary motivation. The group’s social reach extends beyond the bar; Yates officiated member Michael Blood’s wedding last year, wearing a tuxedo jacket decorated with Tetris pieces. Marc Venture, a member since 2019, notes that league members attend each other’s birthdays and going-away parties, reinforcing bonds that transcend the game.

The tournament format is designed for accessibility. Players sign up for head-to-head matches on a Super Nintendo console. Each contestant plays two two-minute rounds against opponents, with the winner determined by the number of lines cleared. A bracket system determines the monthly champion, who receives a trophy. A separate award recognizes the “Rookie of the Month.” Yates’s girlfriend, Joy Thompson, won that rookie award in 2011 when they began dating.

The choice to use the Super Nintendo version of Tetris rather than modern iterations is deliberate. Yates argues that the older version lacks the complex mechanics of contemporary releases, allowing less experienced players to enjoy the game without being overwhelmed. This simplicity also forces skilled players to rely on fundamental techniques rather than modern system optimizations. Blood describes the gameplay as familiar yet dynamic.

The league attracts approximately 20 participants each month, a mix of new and returning players. The demographic range includes young adults, individuals in their 50s, and families where children compete alongside parents. Venture recalls playing with his single mother in childhood, a dynamic that mirrors the inclusive atmosphere of the league.

The group paused in-person meetings in 2020 due to COVID-19 protocols, attempting to continue online but finding the format less effective. They resumed in-person events as restrictions lifted. This hiatus highlighted the group’s role in combating isolation, a concern reflected in a 2024 poll by the American Psychiatric Association which found that 30% of adults feel lonely at least once a week.

Yates notes that the lack of community in 2020 was difficult for him, emphasizing that the group is essential to his well-being. The league remains open to anyone who wishes to join. Participants can check the group’s Instagram page for specific dates. The next scheduled event is on October 31, with sign-up available from 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Someplace Else Brewery.
