Jeff Jones woke up on Friday morning, October 30, to a broken front door and a trail of blood on his porch. Doorbell camera footage captured the sequence of events that began around 1:20 a.m. that morning in the Lake Highlands neighborhood. The video shows an unknown man walking the front porch and ringing the doorbell repeatedly before punching the glass window in the entry door. The impact shattered the pane, and the suspect later kicked the door several times before leaving the scene.
Jones slept through the initial intrusion but was roused by calls and texts from his son, who had woken up to the disturbance. “Donkey kick our door, break the glass, get blood everywhere. I mean it was just a traumatizing event,” Jones said. Although no items were stolen from the home, Jones filed a police report with the Dallas Police Department. Officials are treating the incident as a burglary.
A second homeowner in the same area reported a similar experience earlier that night. That resident stated the suspect banged on the door and kicked it before the homeowner yelled for the man to leave. Police officers arrived at the second location at 7 a.m. despite the incident occurring overnight. Since posting his camera footage online, Jones has received messages from multiple neighbors who believe they have been targeted by the same individual.
The Dallas Police Department identified a potential suspect on Friday but determined the person was not responsible for the Lake Highlands incidents. Investigators are currently reviewing evidence to identify the man. Jones noted that the suspect has a distinctive facial tattoo or marking that may help officers narrow down their search.
Jones has lived in the neighborhood for roughly 24 years. “It's very concerning. We've loved this neighborhood, we've lived here for 20, 23-24 years. It makes you a little nervous that it seems it's happening a little more often than it did 10 years ago,” he said. Neighbors have shared reports of similar break-ins over the past several months, with one resident noting the suspect had targeted their home six months prior.
The department continues its investigation into the series of attempts. Jones plans to install fencing around his property in the coming weeks. He asked residents to look out for the man’s face in the area. “I just want everyone to know his face and be on the lookout. It's a great neighborhood, so hopefully we'll just band together and keep a lookout for each other,” Jones said.
