The New York City Police Department confirmed a fifth reported rape in the Central Park Precinct in 2026, with the suspect remaining at large following an attack at knifepoint. A 39-year-old woman was assaulted by a stranger near the intersection of East 67th Street and East Drive at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Saturday. Police stated that the victim is in stable condition after being transported to a hospital. The incident marks the latest in a series of violent crimes in the park, a location adjacent to residential properties valued at up to $10 million, according to retired NYPD Inspector Paul Mauro.

State leaders have shown a divided response to the latest incident. Governor Kathy Hochul and Attorney General Letitia James have not issued statements regarding the Saturday attack. This silence contrasts with their actions earlier this month, when Hochul appointed James as a special prosecutor in a separate case involving seven Cornell fraternity members accused of rape. Mauro noted that the quick media presence of state leaders in the Cornell case stands in contrast to their current quiet stance. He attributed the delay to the proximity of an upcoming election, which is less than 10 days away.

City officials have weighed in on the matter. Julie Menin, the speaker for the New York City Council, posted on X that she is outraged by the violence. She expressed hope for the survivor's full recovery and stated that every New Yorker deserves to feel safe in the city. Mayor Zohran Mamdani addressed the attack during a news conference on Monday morning. He said the administration is working to ensure the survivor receives necessary support. Mamdani added that the city plans to work with providers and partners to strengthen prevention, address support gaps, and hold perpetrators accountable.

Mauro, a contributor to Fox News, described the current crime statistics as a concerning trend for public safety. He identified Central Park felonies and subway crime as two key metrics that police commanders monitor. Both areas are currently moving in the wrong direction, according to Mauro. For comparison, the Central Park Precinct reported only three rape cases around this time last year. The five confirmed incidents this year represent a notable increase in reported sexual violence within the precinct boundaries.

The NYPD has launched an active investigation into the Saturday attack. The department is asking the public for information about the suspect or the crime. Citizens can call the NYPD Sex Crimes Hotline at 1-212-267-7273 or 646-610-7272. Crime Stoppers can be reached at 1-800-577-TIPS or 1-888-57-PISTA for Spanish speakers. The public may also submit tips via the Crime Stoppers website or by tagging the NYPD on X at @NYPDTips. Police continue to search for the man who threatened the victim with a knife before the assault.

The attack occurred in a part of Central Park that Mauro described as an area where residents would typically expect to feel secure. The proximity to high-value real estate has drawn attention to the safety of the park's surrounding neighborhoods. The victim, identified only by age in police reports, is recovering from the incident. The investigation remains ongoing as detectives review evidence and interview witnesses. No arrests have been made as of Monday. The NYPD has not released a description of the suspect in the initial reports provided to media outlets.
